Seattle draws thousands of tourists each year, particularly during its sunshine-filled warmer months. Among the visitors in July was Daniel Rodriguez Carbajal from Mexicali, Mexico. While he did take in traditional sights including the Space Needle, Pike Place Market and Columbia Tower, he also took three classes toward his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration degree, all of which were part of his experience in City University of Seattle’s Summer in Seattle program.

“I had previously been to Seattle and have always considered it one of my favorite cities I’ve been to because the weather is very nice, the people are very kind, and there is a lot to see and explore,” Daniel said.

This trip through CityU’s annual Summer in Seattle program was different from his pervious vacations because he was able to meet more than 70 other students from CityU’s partner institutions in Mexico, take classes toward his degree and tour major companies that are based in the Pacific Northwest.

“I have had the opportunity to meet people from all over Mexico and share personal experiences with them that have made this trip unforgettable,” Daniel said. “One thing that made the experience different was discovering the city’s culture and how people are very kind and open minded, and how they accept and respect differences, which I believe that should be done by more people around the world.”

Travel spurs interest in a career in international business

Studying in Seattle fit well with Daniel’s academic interests. He is currently earning a degree in International Public Accounting from Centro de Enseñanza Técnica y Superior Universidad in Mexicali, Mexico, and a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from CityU.

“In the future, I want to get an MBA in marketing so that I can have a background in accounting, administration and marketing and relate them to make a company more successful,” Daniel said.

With an eye on the future, one of the things he enjoys most about his current studies in business administration is seeing how it will apply to his career one day.

“The examples we see in class for our projects are real life examples of corporations that currently exist and that most of us aspire to work at,” Daniel said. “What I enjoy about studying business administration is that it can help me obtain a job in an international corporation, which can help me achieve my personal goals, and provide me with opportunities to travel and meet people from different cultures.”

Traveling and meeting new people is something Daniel really enjoys and hopes to continue doing.

Asked what advice he might give future students considering participating in the Summer in Seattle program, Daniel said:

“I’d tell them they should totally participate because it is a one-in-a-lifetime opportunity where they can learn from experts in the administration field who will provide a fresh perspective on different topics that are important in current times, while sharing personal experiences with people they meet and discovering amazing places around the city.”
