It is that time of year again. The days are getting longer and spring is right around the corner, which means it’s time to complete your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for the 2017-2018 academic year.

We know with the hectic pace of school, work and home responsibilities, it’s easy to lose track of deadlines and information. So to make the financial aid application process as simple as possible for you, we developed a handy checklist.

  1. If you’re not a current student, apply for admission to City University of Seattle.
Your financial aid application cannot be fully processed until you have been admitted to the university. The first step toward getting your financial aid award letter is being admitted.
  2. Complete the 2017-2018 Free Application for Federal Student Aid.
If you plan to take classes between July 2017 and June 2018, you need to complete the 2017-2018 FAFSA and be sure to list the CityU Federal School Code: 013022.
The application for the upcoming academic year is available now, and we recommend that you complete it as soon as possible.
  3. Check your CityU email and online Student Center.
All communications from the financial aid office will be sent to your CityU student email address, so please check that account regularly.
In addition, you can view a checklist of everything the financial aid office needs to process your application on your Student Center at My.CityU.Edu. Items will be marked “initiated,” “received” and “reviewed” as appropriate.
  4. Wait for your financial aid to be processed.
Once you have been admitted, completed the FAFSA and have sent it with any needed documentation to the CityU financial aid office, you are eligible to be awarded. Applications for the upcoming academic year will begin to be processed during the spring (April and May). If you have completed the 2017-2018 FAFSA, you can except to hear about your financial aid award for the upcoming year in late spring or early summer.
If you are applying for financial aid after the academic year has started, you can expect your financial aid application to be processed within four to six weeks or sooner, depending on the time of year.
  5. Accept your financial aid award.
Once your application has been processed, the financial aid office will email an award letter notification to your CityU student email address. To finalize the award, you need to officially accept it according to the instructions found in the email.
  6. Receive financial aid disbursements.
Funds will be disbursed through the CityU business office to your student account in accordance with your financial aid award at the beginning of each academic quarter (July, October, January and April).
If there is a balance left over (residual aid), the business office will issue you a refund for the amount via check or direct deposit the second week of classes.
  7. Keep up the good work in your classes.
To remain eligible to receive financial aid, you must make satisfactory academic progress in your chosen academic program. Policies on satisfactory academic progress are available through the financial aid office and registrar’s office.

Applying for financial aid is a big step, especially if you’re considering taking out student loans. At CityU, we recognize that it’s a major investment, which is why we’re committed to partnering with you to the finish.
