Seattle, Wash. – May 25, 2016 – City University of Seattle Announces Partnership with Selah School District in Central Washington
City University of Seattle is partnering with the Selah School District in central Washington to introduce two educational programs that address critical needs at the PreK-12 level. One program supports the development of positive peer interaction skills among students. The second program provides resources to help teachers create inspiring classroom experiences.
According to Selah School District Superintendent Shane Backlund, “the Sanford Harmony partnership has expanded our social and emotional learning opportunities for students, while the Sanford Inspire pact has helped us build on the teacher mentor program in the district. We are grateful for our relationship with CityU and look forward to great things in the future.”
Designed to integrate seamlessly into learning environments, the peer interaction program, known as Sanford Harmony, supports the development of strong social and emotional skills in children as a way to improve relationships into adulthood.
The PreK-6 program, which includes classroom lesson plans, storybooks and activity prompts, has been found to encourage positive attitudes toward school, increased academic performance and empathy as well as reductions in stereotyping and aggression.
The second program, known as Sanford Inspire, provides teachers with video modules and other online resources which have been developed in conjunction with Arizona State University and support the creation of inspiring classroom experiences at the PreK-12 levels.
“As one of the state’s top providers of teachers, CityU is so pleased to be leading this initiative in the Northwest and to be working with the amazing people of the Selah School District,” said Craig Schieber, Dean of CityU’s Albright School of Education.
The partnership is part of a national initiative led by San Diego-based National University and its Sanford Education Center to offer the programs at no cost to schools. National University is collaborating with a group of universities around the country, including City University of Seattle, to advance these programs in coordination with regional schools and districts, such as Selah. City University is leading the expansion of both programs in the Northwest.
