Mom, military member and criminal justice student
Many people have busy schedules, but Jennifer Moreau balances more responsibilities than most. She works 12-hour days, attends classes at City University of Seattle and takes care of three children – two under the age of five.
If her hectic schedule weren’t enough, Jennifer’s daily job comes with its own unique pressures. As an operations specialist in the Coast Guard she assists with search and rescue cases in the Puget Sound area.
“It can get stressful at times, but most any job in the military can,” Jennifer said.
Moreau is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice with the goal of advancing and working in the Coast Guard Investigative Service unit.
“I’ve always watched criminal shows like CSI,” Jennifer said. “What I really want to do is work with the FBI after I retire from the military.”
Personal attention makes a difference
“I take strictly online classes because of my work schedule,” Jennifer said. “I don’t have set days off, so I can’t go into the classroom.”
In addition to the flexible format, Jennifer has found personal attention from the faculty to be valuable.
“My experience has been awesome, I get so much help from the professors, especially with how hectic my job and home life is,” Jennifer said. “In spring I was taking two classes and my due date for my daughter was at the end of the quarter. I had four papers and a baby due at the same time, so my professors worked with me to restructure my workload.”
Advice for future criminal justice students
When asked what she would tell someone interested in studying criminal justice at CityU, Jennifer said:
“I would tell them that it’s a really great degree field to go into as far as the classes, and that the professors are more than willing to work with students. For instance, my professor knows what I’m going through with my 4-month-old daughter, and he understands because he has a new baby too.”
Not only does she recommend the criminal justice program, she recommends CityU as a whole.
“I definitely feel like CityU has given me what I need to succeed,” Jennifer said. “It’s been an all-around great school.”
