MBA Quarterly Newsletter: Spring Quarter
Message from the Director
Welcome to spring!
The spring quarter at City University of Seattle has brought some exciting news to share. We have a new affiliation with the National University System, a new MBA cohort in Prague, a spring MBA mixer, additional Turnitin and Folio180 news, and Enactus Regional Competition results to tell you about!!
Since our last newsletter, CityU has entered an affiliation with the National University System. This is an exciting step for the University as it provides us with resources and access that will strengthen our position in higher education. As an affiliate of the System, CityU will retain its name, identity and standing as an independent, regionally-accredited, nonprofit university and maintain its commitment to serving anyone with the desire to learn.
Also, in partnership with the CityU Alumni Association, the MBA program is having a student mixer. Please join fellow MBA alums and students for a spring networking social at our new Seattle Campus on April 25 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. For more information and registration, see the additional details below. Hope to see you there!
Finally, be sure to read the sections below, which highlight continued growth for the MBA program in Prague, results of the Enactus Regional Competition (which includes several current MBA students), as well as some important news regarding Turnitin and Foliio180.
Have a successful and challenging quarter!
CityU Affiliation with the National University System
As mentioned, City University of Seattle has become the newest affiliate of the National University System. According to National University System’s Chancellor, Dr. Jerry C. Lee, “The addition of City University of Seattle will serve to broaden the scope of educational opportunities available to all of the students of the National University System, including students at CityU. The National University System and City University of Seattle share a common mission — providing access to a quality, student-centered nonprofit education that is convenient, affordable, and relevant. City University of Seattle will be an important and welcome addition to the National University System.” We are very excited about this new step for the university!

Team Regional Champions!
The Enactus Team of City University of Seattle competed in the Regional Competition on Friday, April 19th. The event was one of 11 Enactus USA Regional Competitions being held across the United States. We are proud to announce that our students were awarded with the Regional Champion Award and they will represent CityU at the National Competition in Kansas city on May, 22nd.
Enactus encourages university all students to take what they are learning in the classroom and apply it to real-life situations, using their knowledge to make life better in their communities by implementing their entrepreneurial spirit. Currently, the CityU Enactus Team includes undergraduate and graduate students from 11 different countries, 10 of which are MBA students. These dedicated members have touched the community this year in several ways by extending their Mosaic of Giving Projects that include: Giving Hope, Giving Health, Giving Garden, Giving Culture, Giving Home and Giving Book. This year CityU students’ efforts to help low-income residents to grow their own produce were sponsored through a $2,000 grant from Lowe.
All CityU students are invited to get involved with Enactus and make the most of their CityU experience by taking action, implementing their ideas and making a difference. For more information, please contact Monika Petrova (current MBA student), President of Enactus, at monika.petrova@CityU.edu
Congratulations to the CityU Enactus Team Regional Champions and good luck at Nationals!
CityU MBA in the Czech Republic
A new MBA cohort will begin this spring quarter in Prague. Vysoka Skola Financni a Spravni or University of Finance and Administration is the largest private institution of higher education in the Czech Republic, both in the number of students and in the number of full-time faculty. Together, these factors provide a rich educational experience for the students who study here. City University of Seattle’s partnership with VSFS allows Czech students to engage in MBA studies.
A distinguishing factor of the MBA program in Prague is the unique faculty mix. Students are taught by experienced local faculty as well as by City University of Seattle’s distinguished traveling international MBA instructors. Selection to the City University of Seattle MBA program at VSFS is based on a combination of previous business experience, academic background, and competence in the English language. VSFS is proud to host this flagship program which is attracting students from top national and international companies. Good luck to our newest MBA students!
As of Fall 2013, Turnitin will be a requirement for all courses within the MBA Program. The Turnitin link will be available within your Blackboard course. In addition, Turnitin instructor training will be conducted in the summer. The School of Management team has created a Turnitin account for all MBA faculty members. Instructors, if you have any questions regarding your Turnitin account, please contact Dr. Laura Williamson at WilliamL@cityu.edu.
Your feedback as part of our academic program assessment process is essential to program improvement and our accreditation with NWCCU. The new Folio180 e-portfolio system has been designed to help with this process. Students in the MBA program have begun uploading a series of their program assignments to Folio180. As part of this process, students are asked to provide feedback on the degree to which the program assignments accurately assess the program outcomes. The results have been extremely informative and have led already to program improvements. If you have any questions about Folio180, please contact your course manager, (as listed in this newsletter).
