Maximize Your Online Learning Experience

Online learning certainly isn’t for everyone, but it can be a great option for someone who needs a little more flexibility. If you are new to online classes, you may feel a little lost and overwhelmed by the environment. Here are a few tips to help you succeed in your online classes.

1. Manage your time

Online classes require discipline and planning. At the beginning of the quarter, you should take a look at the weekly schedule for each class and determine right away if the work is manageable each week or if you need to plan ahead to complete some of the larger assignments on a more regimented schedule. The beauty of online classes is that you can make your own time work for you. You want to ensure that you’re working on each class daily—so squeeze in the time to login where you can. The quality of your work will improve if you plan your time efficiently.

2. Participate

Online classes require participation in discussion boards and forums, so it’s important to really engage with your class. It’s not good enough to just post the minimum requirement. To really get the knowledge and experience the class has to offer, seriously participate in these discussions. Carefully read what other students are saying, read what your instructor is saying, and really spend time thinking about the material you’re learning. These discussions and forums are designed to keep you virtually engaged, since you’re not attending a physical class. Be just as prepared as you would if you walked into the classroom weekly.

3. Find your happy place

As long as you have reliable internet service, you can access your class anywhere you want. It’s important, though, to really know where you’re able to complete your best work. Do you work best at home? Does the local library provide the peace and quiet you need to be effective? Do you prefer to work at the coffee shop so you can down a few espressos while you’re busy? Either way, just make sure you have what you need to be successful. Try out a few different places. If you’re struggling to concentrate and complete your work, it’s possible you’re not in the right environment.

It may be obvious, but you’ll become more and more comfortable with online learning the more you take online classes.
