READ MOREEvery summer quarter, City University of Seattle students enrolled in its four partner institutions in Mexico CETYS Universidad in Mexicali, Tijuana, and Ensenad; Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León’s (UANL); Facultad de Contaduría Pública y Administración (FACPYA) in Monterrey; Universidad Autónoma de San Luis Potosí (UASLP), in San Luis Potosí; University in Puebla (UPAEP) travel to City University of Seattle in Seattle or to its partner institution in Prague.
This summer, 238 students were engaged in this international learning experiences. In 2014, 194 students participated in this international learning experiences. Annually, CityU has been delighted to see an increase in the total number of students participating in the truly unique international program.
CityU students in Mexico are enrolled in three undergraduate programs at CityU:
Students entering the program at the beginning of their junior year have the opportunity to enroll in a “Summer in Seattle Study Abroad” program for 3.5 weeks in Seattle and take three face-to-face courses. The same students, of which 132 participated in Seattle this summer, also complete courses online with the same instructors later in the summer. These students stay in residence halls nearby and have the opportunity to explore Seattle. Next year, students will stay at the new residence hall, which is less a few blocks away from CityU’s campus.
Between the students third and fourth year of study, CityU students from Mexico have the opportunity to study at CityU’s Prague location, and utilize the facilities and residence halls provided by our partner, Vysoka Skola Financni a Spravni (VSFS). This program is also 3.5 weeks long. Students take one face-to-face course, taught by a CityU faculty member in Europe. This summer, 62 students from our partners in Mexico studied in Prague and others who were not able to travel, took courses online.
This integrated study abroad program combines the best attributes of CityU’s undergraduate international experience. The retention and completion rate for students in these degree programs is over 90 percent, and when these students graduate they actually receive two degrees – one from their Mexican institution and one from CityU. They will also have had courses in three countries and in two languages, and will have experienced three very different cultures throughout their time in college. Due to the international exposure that the students gain in this program, and the U.S. accreditation of that it has, the majority of graduates find employment before they graduate and are often placed in multinational companies.
In addition to the students from Mexico in the double degree program, CityU was selected to host English language students in its Washington Academy of Languages as part of the Proyecta 100,000 initiative by the Mexican government. CityU hosted 44 students in its English Language Program this summer, 32 of which were from UNAM (Universidad Autónoma de México in Mexico City). The rest come from CityU partner institutions and other Proyecta 100,000 approved universities.
CityU looks forward to growing these programs in the near and distant future, as they are integral to serving its mission.
