CityU brings national education, nonprofit programs to Washington
City University of Seattle has had the opportunity to bring the Sanford Education Programs to Washington schools and the Sanford Institute of Philanthropy to local nonprofits through its affiliation with the National University System.
The National University System (NUS) recently announced a generous $28 million donation by T. Denny Sanford to support these programs, and as an NUS affiliate, CityU’s extensions of these programs in Washington will benefit as well. Learn more about the impact CityU has had with these programs to date below.
Sanford Harmony and Inspire Programs
The Sanford Education Programs, Harmony and Inspire, are overseen by CityU’s Albright School of Education and are available to schools and teachers across Washington State free of charge. The Sanford Harmony program, which is being used and introduced to more than 55 schools in Washington, is a curriculum that teaches students in preschool through sixth grades how to be more empathetic, respectful and inclusive. The Sanford Inspire program offers online professional development modules for teachers in order to equip them with skills to engage and motivate their students. It is currently being used in three Washington school districts for teacher support and retention programs and in more than 20 districts as part of CityU’s statewide teacher clock hour program.
CityU also utilizes the Sanford Harmony and Inspire programs to strengthen the university’s education programs and offerings. The Albright School of Education writes weekly blog posts to share information, tools and resources with Northwest educators. In addition, CityU offers a $5,000 scholarship to Sanford Harmony school teachers who want to earn a Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction.
Sanford Institute of Philanthropy
The newest addition is the Sanford Institute of Philanthropy at City University of Seattle, which is part of a national network of Institutes being launched by the founding Sanford Institute of Philanthropy at National University. The Sanford Institute of Philanthropy at City University of Seattle, which is currently being rolled out, will provide educational and professional fundraising resources to nonprofit leaders and volunteers in Western Washington. Through trainings and events, individuals in the nonprofit sector will learn how to better to communicate about their causes and apply a business-minded approach to fundraising. CityU also plans to use its campuses to host nonprofit leaders for events and networking opportunities.
