Message from the President – October 2017
Graduate education helps students achieve mastery over their disciplines, opens new pathways for career advancement and equips students with the knowledge and experience they need to transition into new fields. Similarly, doctoral-level education helps students deepen their knowledge, through research and reflection, and develop true proficiency in their discipline. Graduate education is life changing. City University of Seattle is dedicated to making graduate education accessible and attainable for all potential students.
CityU currently offers 16 master’s and two doctoral degrees. We are the second highest producer of MBAs in Washington State, according to the Puget Sound Business Journal. We are the only school in the Northwest that offers an online master’s degree in project management that is globally accredited by the Project Management Institute.
One thing that sets our graduate programs apart is that many of them are available partly, if not wholly, online. This flexibility makes it possible for working adults to return to school for another degree without having to sacrifice their full-time jobs.
Doctor of Business Administration student Chris Gehrke recently said, “If it wasn’t for it being online, I couldn’t be in the DBA program, but because it is, I can really make it fit my schedule and I don’t have to choose between work and school. I know a lot of fellow students couldn’t pursue the degree if it wasn’t online.”
Another advantage of our graduate programs is that they are often taught by practitioners, who are also dedicated to the discipline. As experts in the field and scholars, our instructors bring their academic knowledge and real-world insight together to make rich learning environments for our students. Our faculty’s practical expertise and the applied nature of our programs prepare our students to be contributors on the first day of work, and to understand, research, and solve real-world problems. This makes City University of Seattle a very special place for those who want to make a difference at work immediately.
Master of Arts in Counseling student Cash Cada said, “The model CityU uses is really practical and based in the current needs of the community. The faculty are very knowledgeable and they’re all still working in some way in the field, so what you learn is grounded in the basis of hands-on skills and techniques you’ll use in the field.”
CityU is committed to growing our graduate-level education and expanding opportunities for students. Our CityU 2020 strategic plan directs us to develop at least one new differentiated graduate program annually in a discipline that is aligned with the evolving job demands of the Pacific Northwest. In January 2017, we launched the Master of Professional Accounting, which in addition to core accounting skills, helps students specialize in two concentration areas of their choice. Additional graduate programs are currently under development for the future.
As the Fall Quarter begins, we have the privilege of working with more students, helping them master new skills and finish advanced degrees.
