APA Citation Tools (Part 2)

APA Citation Tools (Part 2)

In Tip: APA Citation Tools (Part 1), we demonstrated the automated reference citations that are generated by online databases. There are other tools available online to help you format your reference citations using APA style (6th edition). These include, but aren’t limited to, KnightCite Citation Service, Son of Citation Machine, and Zotero (a free Firefox browser extension). Microsoft Word also has citation formatting tools available to help you build your reference list (see the Reference tab in MS Word 2007 or 2010).

You can use these citations as a starting point for your reference list, but please note that they are not always entirely accurate and may require additional editing. Compare the following citations and disclaimers generated using these online tools. How many errors do you find?

KnightCite Citation Service
Lamb, A., & Johnson, L. (2010). Beyond googling: Applying Google tools to inquiry-based learning. Teacher Librarian, 37(4), 83-86.

KnightCite disclaimer: NOTE: The APA manual of style calls for titles to be capitalized in a very particular way. Only the first word of the title, first word of the subtitle (after the colon), any proper nouns, and acronyms should be capitalized. Because of programming restraints, there’s no way for KnightCite to consistently distinguish what is intended as a proper or common noun, so your title casing was left as is. Please take note of this rule and apply it to the citation after copying it into your reference list. While the Hekman Library has worked hard to verify that KnightCite results are consistent with the rules set out by the citation style guides, KnightCite users are ultimately responsible for the citations they include in their research. Please consult the guides referenced here.

Son of Citation Machine
Lamb, A, & Johnson, L. (2010). Beyond googling: applying google tools to inquiry-based learning. Teacher Librarian, 37(4), 83-86.
