Master in Teaching with Teacher Certification
Special Education (K-12) - Washington State
Is this program for me?
The Master in Teaching degree with emphasis in K-12 Special Education is designed for individuals who
wish to pursue a rewarding career teaching students with disabilities.
If you are a career changer or somebody who has already earned a bachelor's degree (or higher) in
another subject but do not yet have a teaching certificate, this innovative program provides career
transition into the specialized field of special ed teaching. The program is offered in a work
friendly two year format which will prepare you teach in your own classroom faster than you thought possible.

What will I learn?
This program focuses on providing students with both field participation and academics. The course work
is combined with classroom teaching in a comprehensive program that will prepare you for teaching in
the real world.
Upon successful completion of the program, you will have satisfied requirements for a
Washington State Residency Teaching Certificate with an Endorsement for Special Education (K-12) and a
M.I.T. Degree. The curriculum for the program meets Washington State Administrative Codes (WAC) for
teacher preparation programs.

What can I do with my degree?
Upon completion of the program (and passing score on any state required exams) you will be prepared to
teach K-12 students who qualify for special education services in Washington public schools and in other
schools that honor the Washington residency certificate.
Additional opportunities include teaching in
other states, substitute teaching, and eligibility to pursue additional endorsements. Earning your M.I.T.
degree also qualifies you for a higher starting salary in most districts.

A passing grade for the Washington State WEST-B exam is required of all new applicants entering the program and a passing score on the WEST-E must be met by teacher candidates before the Master Degree and teacher certification are awarded. The program starts in the fall and lasts 7 quarters. Classes are held every Saturday and there are also weekday internships required every other quarter. The program concludes with 14 weeks of student teaching. Schedules are subject to change, please check online or contact your advisor for the latest info.
