Alternative Route to Residency Certificate in Secondary Math
Designed for career changers who want to teach and already hold a bachelor’s degree (or higher) in math or a related field.


Is this program for me?
If you have a degree in math or a related field, experience working with math and are ready to change careers and become a teacher, this program may be for you. Prerequisites:
  • BA or higher in math or related field
  • 5+ years career related experience (application of math skills)
  • Passing score on the WEST-B & WEST-E (Praxis II) #0061 competency exams
  • Available to new teachers only - must not hold a valid teaching certificate from any state
  • Must fit with one of the following 3 definitions of Alternative Routes:

How long will it take?
  • Program Begins Summer, 2008
  • A 6-8 week daytime summer institute is followed by Saturday seminars that support your yearlong mentored internship (September-June).
  • Certification in June, 2009

Costs
  • Tuition is approximately $11,500 (subject to change)
  • Twenty $8K forgivable loans available: Washington State Professional Educator Standards Board is offering an $8000 forgivable loan to be applied towards tuition costs in exchange for a 2 year commitment of teaching math in Washington state.
  • Other financial aid may be available
