Seattle Seahawks starting Cornerback #21, Kelly Jennings, our 2008 Higher Education Spokesperson

As part of its partnership with the Seattle Seahawks, City University of Seattle has named starting Cornerback Kelly Jennings as its higher education spokesperson. Jennings will make public appearances on behalf of the university throughout the duration of the 2008 Seahawks Undergrad Scholarship.

Drafted by the Seahawks with the 31st selection in the first round of the 2006 NFL draft, Jennings holds two undergraduate degrees, one in finance and another in business management.

"I am honored that CityU has asked me to speak on behalf of the importance of higher education," comments Seattle Seahawks cornerback, Kelly Jennings. "The education process never ends, and by providing accessible programs in business, arts and sciences, and education to working adults, CityU removes the barriers to learning. The 2008 Seahawks Undergrad Scholarship is just another example of how the university and the Seahawks both have a strong commitment to helping adults advance their career goals."

Meet the 2007 winner DaMara Stearns

DaMara has been enrolled at Clover Park Technical College since the summer of 2005, working towards an associate’s degree. She has maintained an A average in her full-time studies, completed a campus-based work study program and held two additional part-time jobs.

DaMara's reference letters, submitted by Clover Park faculty, speak to her incredible work ethic and ability to focus. With an interesting turn of phrase, DaMara's accounting professor recommends her as "well worth the investment". DaMara's educational goals are to complete her BA in Accounting, and become a Certified Public Accountant (CPA).

DaMara has an entrepreneurial spirit and an interest in operating her own financial practice. She has held a position at H&R Block learning the basics of tax preparation and customer service.

Her accomplishments take on greater value in light of the many obstacles she has overcome. DaMara's hard-work early-on to build both a business and a personal relationship did not bring the expected results. In a testimony to her integrity and persistence, she set personal goals to pay-down debt and to create a plan of action that involved moving back in with her parents, returning to school and beginning entry-level work in line with her career goals.

Taking on a leadership role, DaMara persisted with an idea to fund student scholarships at Clover Park Technical College through a student tee-shirt design contest and raised $600 for a 2006 scholarship.

DaMara was awarded the 2007 Seahawks Undergrad Scholarship by the corporate and community professionals who comprised the Finalist Selection Committee. Based on demonstrated scholarship, leadership and service, DaMara was viewed as the candidate most likely to be successful in her future career and most worthy of $15,000 to finish her undergraduate degree.
