Develop the skills and confidence in English that you need to succeed here at CityU.

The English Language Program (ELP) consists of six levels, from beginning to advanced. You'll enter at one of these levels, based on your score on a placement test, which can be taken at CityU or in your home country. Most students complete one level per quarter; however, since individuals learn at a different rate, some students may skip or repeat levels.

ELP classes start at the beginning of October, January, March and July and run for 10 weeks. Full-time ELP students will have 20 hours of classroom work per week (4 hours per day, Monday through Friday), and up to two hours of homework per class hour.

All CityU instructors have graduate degrees and years of successful teaching experience. We keep class sizes small - no more than 15 students - so that you can get the personal attention you deserve. When you've completed the ELP, you can enter our Language-Assisted MBA program or other bachelor's degree programs without any further language testing.

About our location

CityU's main site is in Bellevue, Washington, where you will attend classes. Bellevue is located approximately 15 minutes from downtown Seattle. This area is home to many of the most important businesses in the world, such as Microsoft, Boeing, Starbucks and Amazon.com. Our campus is five minutes from the beauty of Lake Washington, 40 minutes from skiing in the Cascade Mountains, and 2.5 hours from Vancouver, B.C., Canada. A bus system operates between Bellevue and the greater Seattle area. There are many apartments available near the Bellevue site, along with numerous shopping and recreation areas.

ESL 060	Academic Writing Skills VI	0
ESL 060 is an advanced composition course for students whose first language is not English. This course reviews the writing process, the academic essay, and argumentation. Students are introduced to collegiate papers and using research. Attention will also be given to clarity, sentence structure, and grammar.
ESL 061	Academic Reading Skills VI	0
ESL 061 is an advanced course for refining reading skills, increasing speed and comprehension, and acquiring college-level vocabulary. Students learn to apply reading skills through discussions and exercises. Reading excerpts from college texts, analyzing and using information from tables and graphs, and making inferences are emphasized. Additional practice in note-taking, summarizing, inferring the meaning of vocabulary from context, and using the dictionary selectively is provided. Students read passages with a variety of topics, sources, and purposes, including reading for pleasure.
ESL 062	Academic Listening and Speaking Skills VI	0
ESL 062 is designed to improve students listening comprehension and professional speaking skills. Emphasis is given to oral presentations of subjects related to the students area of academic interest and to topics pertaining to North American culture. Students whose first language is not English have the opportunity to practice and gain confidence in giving oral presentations by participating in impromptu talks, group discussions and debates, interviews, and professional simulations. Specific aspects of pronunciation will be emphasized such as word stress, rising intonation, and consonant deletion.
ESL 063	Advanced English Grammar VI	0
ESL 063 is an advanced grammar reinforcement and utilization course, emphasizing both oral and written language skills. This course focuses on the major structures of English and also explores the various exceptions and nuances of these structures. The use of grammar within the context of authentic materials is emphasized. The instructor will focus on the use of coordinating conjunctions and connectors, adverb clauses, and conditionals.
