What is an Alternative Route?
The Alternative Route to Dual Endorsement is part of City University of Seattle's
Teacher Certification program, and is designed for Para-educators (and others*) seeking a Washington WA Residency Certificate and wish
to teach in high needs areas such as Special Education, ELL (English Language Learners) or Math.
The Professional Educator Standards Board of the State of Washington currently provides an $8000 per year (forgivable loan) toward
tuition for candidates who desire to teach in a shortage area. With successful completion of this program and any state required tests,
you will earn your WA teaching certification. Route 1 candidates with a transferable associate's degree will also earn their BA in Education. (see below for full details)
Please Note: Funding for this program may be affected by legislative session, please talk to an adviser for current updates on funding for this program.

What will I learn?
This program offers the flexibility and security of becoming a teacher endorsed to teach in two areas. Candidates will learn the key
skills and knowledge required for earning dual endorsements, choosing a combination of Special Education or ELL and Elementary or Math.
- Dual Endorsements in Elementary (K-8) plus Special Education (p-12) or ELL
- Dual Endorsements in Math (Mathematics, 5-12 or Middle Level Math 4-9) plus Special Education or ELL
During year one of program, candidates work with a cohort to learn and demonstrate the knowledge areas of both endorsements. In year two each
candidate, with the support of an internship team in their building, designs and manages their professional development plan, demonstrating the
skills and competencies through performance tasks while steadily taking on greater responsibilities of the classroom teacher.
