Lee Gorsuch, President
Lee Gorsuch has been president of City University of Seattle since February 2006.
President Gorsuch is a recognized leader in education, public policy, economics, and science. Prior to joining City
University, he served as Chancellor of the University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA) from 1994 until 2004 when he was
named Chancellor Emeritus. President Gorsuch also held positions as Dean of the School of Public Affairs at UAA
and the Director of the Institute of Social and Economic Research at the University of Alaska. He has served
in the private sector as well, most notably as a senior associate with the internationally renowned economic
consulting firm, Nathan Associates, based in Washington, D.C.
Throughout his extensive career, President Gorsuch has been a driving force in public policy, particularly
in the area of science, and has advised numerous Congressional and legislative committees as well as advocacy groups.
He was appointed by President Clinton to the U.S. Arctic Research Commission and worked to raise awareness in
Congress and the Executive Branch regarding the crucial role the Artic plays as a barometer of global climate change.
He has also served as the Chair of the U.S. Man in the Biosphere's High Latitude Ecosystems Directorate and as
President of the Alaska chapter of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
An experienced researcher and research administrator, President Gorsuch has been honored with grants
from and/or served as a consultant to such organizations and agencies as: The National Science Foundation,
The Ford Foundation, The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, The Wm. H. Donner Foundation, The Rockefeller Foundation,
The U.S. Department of Transportation, The U.S. Department of the Interior, The Bureau of Indian Affairs,
The U.S. Department of Agriculture, The U.S. Forest Service, The U.S. Department of Labor, The Bureau of Land Management,
The U.S. Department of Commerce as well as numerous private and public companies.
President Gorsuch has also assisted many private and public corporations and organizations in strategic
planning and organizational development, including Commonwealth North, Alaska Airlines, the Anchorage
Chamber of Commerce, the Anchorage Economic Development Corporation, the Alaska Native Foundation, and the Alaska Military Command.
President Gorsuch holds an MS in Community Development and a BA in Economics, both from the University
of Missouri, as well as an honorary doctorate from UAA.
