NCPDLP Frequently Asked Questions

Can I start my program at any time?
The University will accept applications and announce admissions decisions continually throughout the year for most programs. Most degree programs may commence at any given quarter. Exceptions are limited to programs in the Albright School of Education.

City University of Seattle's undergraduate degree programs are open to applicants over the age of 18 who hold a high school or GED diploma, who can benefit from post-secondary education, and who are mature enough to manage the responsibilities imposed by university studies.

Will I be assigned an advisor, and will I be able to communicate with that person on a regular basis?
The Academic Advisor assigned to support students enrolled in the NCPDLP is Beverly Johnson, who has worked for the university for 20 years as an academic advisor. Beverly currently works with students stationed at Navy bases in Washington State where the University is headquartered.

How much of the degree has to be taken through a partnership school to meet residency requirements?
Students enrolled in a bachelor's degree program are required to complete a minimum of 45-quarter hour credits with the institution in order to graduate. Students enrolled in a master's degree program are required to complete a minimum of 33-quarter hour credits with the institution in order to graduate.

Will courses from other colleges transfer into your partnership school degree plan?
City University of Seattle may accept up to 90 lower division credits from recognized two-year institutions toward fulfillment of lower division requirements in a bachelor's program. Students must complete all general education requirements.

City University of Seattle may accept up to 135 approved credits from recognized four-year colleges and universities toward fulfillment of bachelor's degree degree requirements. Of these credits, 45 must clearly be: upper-division credits and directly equivalent to City University of Seattle courses, as determined by similar course number, title, and content; or approved upper-division professional courses.

City University of Seattle will accept up to 12 quarter hour credits from recognized universities toward fulfillment of masters degree requirements providing: the credits are 500 level or above and directly equivalent to City University of Seattle courses, as determined by similar course number, title, and content; or approved by the appropriate program chair; and a grade of 3.0 (B) or better was earned.

How will classes be delivered?
Courses for the Bachelor of Science in Mass Communication and Journalism are available via standard distance learning. Contact with the assigned faculty member may occur via mail, phone, fax, or email. The student determines the type and level of contact.

Is there a placement test?
City University of Seattle is an open-enrollment institution. No placement tests are required.

Do you have study guides for the courses offered?
Each individual course has a Distance Learning Guide that is provided when the textbooks are purchased. The Distance Learning Guide provides the course syllabus, detailed information on required assignments, and a suggest timeline for completing the course.

Do I have to own a computer to do distance learning?
Students do not have to own a computer to complete standard distance learning courses. However, each City University of Seattle student must have access to a computer. It is expected that all students submit coursework that is word-processed. Some technical, mathematical or accounting courses do require use of a computer.

Does your school accept credits from foreign institutions?
City University of Seattle does accept credits from foreign institutions. Official transcripts must be provided to the registrar's office for formal evaluation.

Can I take CLEP and other tests for credit towards a degree?
The University will award credit for general CLEP examinations according to the following standards:
  • English Composition (9 qtr. credits 421)
  • Humanities (9 qtr. credits 421)
  • Mathematics (9 qtr. credits 421)
  • Natural Science (9 qtr. credits 421)
  • Social Science/History (9 qtr. credits 421)

The University will award credit for CLEP subject examinations providing students earn a minimum score (421) equivalent to the minimum score recommended by the American Council on Education (ACE) Guide.
