CityU Graduates

Message from the President – December 2016

June seems like a long time ago, particularly as snow flies around our City University’s Seattle campus. But just six months ago, we celebrated as 1,205 students worldwide graduated from CityU. Christian Kawkabani was among our graduates, earning an MBA in Finance. Shortly after graduation, he moved to San Jose to become business and finance controller for the firm where he interned. His time studying at CityU trained him well to think strategically and take a leadership role in his new company, he said last week from sunny California.

“The practitioner-scholar model is why I chose City University for my MBA,” he said “The faculty know the real world, and are amazing…2016 was a fantastic year.”

Student success is why we work all year. We know a quality education from CityU can be the key to many fantastic years.

2016 was an excellent year for City University, too, providing institutional growth, change, and new opportunities. So like Christian and all our graduates, we have lots to celebrate!

The strength of our academic programs is always a focus for us. This year, the quality of our programs was validated by a positive review and reaccreditation of our Bachelor of Science in Information Systems by ABET, and a successful site visit and review of our counseling program in Canada by the Campus Alberta Quality Council. In addition to growing our existing academic programs, we’ve also worked on the development of new programs including the Graduate Certificate in Chemical Dependency Counseling, which is launching in January.

As a result of our commitment to serving working adults and transfer students, CityU is continually looking for new and creative ways to meet the needs of our students. This fall, we launched a new partnership with Vets2PM to help veterans leverage their military training and transition to careers as project managers. We also opened a new site at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, so we will be able to connect with and educate military members and their families at a location that is convenient for them. We also opened a beautiful new campus in Edmonton, Alberta, where our students are doing impressive work in the community as part of their program.

All that we do has the ultimate aim of allowing us to best serve our students, and reach as many students as possible. In 2016, we increased the number of new students by 9 percent in the spring, 33 percent in the summer, and 51 percent in the fall. The decision these students have made confirms the quality of our institution and affirms the good work that you are doing.

We have accomplished a lot this year, but I truly believe the best is yet to come. I look forward to seeing what we can accomplish together in 2017!
